Online business vs. brick-and-mortar business—which one to choose?

Online business vs. brick-and-mortar business—which one to choose?

If you choose to take the harder path and opt for your own business, you are in for a long adventure. Running a business is not for everyone, but once you decide that you want something more out of life, I will try to help you choose the type of business by showing two different examples of running a business—an online business and a brick-and-mortar business.

Online business vs. brick-and-mortar business—how do they differ?

I used to be a waiter at a restaurant, and today I still run a restaurant as a manager (update: in early 2019 I quit my job for online business). For a long time, I also has run a company in parallel and operated in an online business (Amazon + blog with online courses), where I earn more than in a job. Why am I still working as a manager? Because I like this job, I earn well and I care about the place I manage. However, I want to show you what running a brick-and-mortar business looks like, when operating in a rented space and employing several workers.

If you enjoy working with people and like a lot of activity, then a brick-and-mortar business is for you. Every day you have contact with people, the phone rings often, and there is always something to do. This type of business requires you to be a very energetic person above all, and it’s not a place for someone quiet or timid. I would say that it is a business for a strong and confident person, as it requires constant readiness to act and quick reactions.

As the owner of such a business, you are responsible for everything. In this case, people are a very difficult factor to control and manage. Conflicts and misunderstandings are a daily occurrence and are definitely a downside of this type of business. Employees come and go, sometimes someone doesn’t show up for work, and some may struggle with their assigned tasks.

Remember that as the owner, you are the one responsible for everything. There are hardware failures and difficult contacts with authorities. The fixed costs of running such a business are also very high. Regardless of turnover, you must pay rent and salaries to your employees. All of this makes the risk quite significant, and by running such a business poorly, you can lose a lot of money. Just opening such a business is also very costly.

I would say that this is not a business for beginners. It requires capital, strong nerves, and a lot of hard work. However, many people are engaged in this type of activity and are doing well. If such a business is well thought out, it can bring very good profits.

Why did I choose an online business?

I started developing my online business in 2016, but it wasn’t until the end of 2017 that my earnings in this aspect significantly increased. This was due to the fact that I was gaining the new knowledge needed to create and publish new products and I was simply getting to work systematically. Today, I earn more in online business than in a full-time job, and eventually I will probably shift to earning solely online.

How does online business compare to brick-and-mortar business? First and foremost, an online business does not require large costs—both at the beginning and later on. Costs are an inherent part of every business, also this one, and must be paid, but they are unimaginably smaller than in the case of a stationary business. You don’t have to rent a space or hire employees. The only people who will work for you are potential freelancers who will occasionally perform tasks for you. This is a big advantage of an online business, and even publishing 10 books on Amazon is practically no expense compared to opening a small cafe.

Online business vs. brick-and-mortar business—which one to choose?

When running an online business (e.g. selling on Amazon, running a blog, etc.), you often work alone on your computer. This also requires being defined and decisive, but you can do it from the comfort of your home. For some, this will be a big plus, and for others a huge minus. My nature is that I am more of an introverted person and I definitely enjoy working in online business from my home more than in a crowded restaurant late at night. This is a very important, as each of us has different preferences, and it is crucial to choose a work style that suits our personality.

In online business, the responsibility for equipment and costs is much lower. We don’t deal with malfunctioning equipment or leaking pipes here as often. However, we often have IT-related issues, which of course require a different set of skills.

In my opinion, the biggest advantage of online business is much lower costs. There is no need to rent a premises or hire employees, and low initial costs are the biggest advantage. Especially if you don’t have a large capital to start with. Anyone with an average job and a monthly income from full-time work can start an online business. We can develop an online business while working full-time, which can be much more difficult in the case of a stationary business.

Online business or brick-and-mortar business—which one is for you?

First of all, think carefully about what you are good at and how you can use your predispositions. If you are an extroverted person with some capital, you will definitely do better in running a brick-and-mortar business that requires constant contact with people. However, if you prefer to work from home and are more of an introverted person, then an online business may be a much better option for you. It’s up to you to decide.

I have tasted every kind of business, and I must admit that running a restaurant is a great challenge, just like the online business in publishing books on Amazon. What kind of business do I prefer? I guess that’s obvious. The moment when I will fully transition to my online business is getting closer and closer. As soon as this happens, there will definitely be a longer article and a video on this topic.

How to start your own online business?

You definitely need to start by choosing a model for your own online business. To start your own online business, it is worth deciding whether you want to deal with, for example, selling books on Amazon, blogging, creating online courses, or running an online store. I encourage you to take advantage of my free Amazon and online business course, where I show the best types of online business: here. 1
00:00:00,200 –> 00:00:03,914
Hi! I’m Tomek.
From Waiter To Millionaire. Welcome.

2
00:00:03,915 –> 00:00:07,229
In my last video,
I told you about the difference

3
00:00:07,230 –> 00:00:11,400
between working on a full-time job
and running a business,

4
00:00:11,401 –> 00:00:13,914
especially an online business.

5
00:00:13,915 –> 00:00:20,229
I told you that the approach must be
different in case of running a business.

6
00:00:20,230 –> 00:00:23,143
Be welcome to check out that video.

7
00:00:23,144 –> 00:00:27,343
In this video, I’ll tell you
about the difference

8
00:00:27,344 –> 00:00:31,286
between traditional business
and online business.

9
00:00:31,287 –> 00:00:39,486
I’ll present the pros and cons of both,
because I can show them on my example.

10
00:00:39,487 –> 00:00:44,171
I want to help you with
answering questions and doubts.

11
00:00:44,172 –> 00:00:48,400
If you’re considering starting
an online business,

12
00:00:48,401 –> 00:00:53,329
then you’ll learn whether
it’s the type of business for you.

13
00:00:53,330 –> 00:00:58,271
I started as a driver,
then I was a waiter in a restaurant

14
00:00:58,272 –> 00:01:01,057
and now I’m a restaurant manager.

15
00:01:01,058 –> 00:01:04,514
And this is an example of
a traditional business,

16
00:01:04,515 –> 00:01:07,640
which I know inside out,
as I’m running it.

17
00:01:07,640 –> 00:01:11,243
So, I know what
traditional business involves

18
00:01:11,244 –> 00:01:13,971
and what are it’s pros and cons.

19
00:01:13,972 –> 00:01:18,729
At the same time, I’ve been running
my online business since 2016.

20
00:01:18,730 –> 00:01:22,371
It’s mainly Amazon, books,
simple products

21
00:01:22,372 –> 00:01:26,457
and now, since 2018, my blog
From Waiter To Millionaire.

22
00:01:26,458 –> 00:01:31,929
I earn there more than in a full-time job
as a restaurant manager.

23
00:01:31,930 –> 00:01:38,429
I want to show you the differences,
so that you can choose something for you.

24
00:01:38,430 –> 00:01:42,914
At first, let me tell you
how traditional business looks like,

25
00:01:42,915 –> 00:01:47,343
basing on the example of a restaurant,
but it can be applied to

26
00:01:47,344 –> 00:01:51,414
all kinds of businesses,
in which you have a few employees,

27
00:01:51,415 –> 00:01:54,586
your premises
and you work with people.

28
00:01:54,587 –> 00:01:57,343
What are the pros and cons?

29
00:01:57,344 –> 00:02:00,671
Above all,
working in a traditional business,

30
00:02:00,672 –> 00:02:03,329
in which you have
employees, premises

31
00:02:03,330 –> 00:02:08,757
and a constant contact with people,
you must have a very specific character.

32
00:02:08,758 –> 00:02:13,100
In the previous video,
I told you that you must have

33
00:02:13,101 –> 00:02:15,543
a proper approach to business.

34
00:02:15,544 –> 00:02:20,543
Now, having a traditional business,
you’re exposed to people every day,

35
00:02:20,544 –> 00:02:25,757
so you must be a very determined,
confident person, knowing what you want.

36
00:02:25,758 –> 00:02:31,043
Also, you must have some knowledge
and manage people every day.

37
00:02:31,044 –> 00:02:35,414
You must be able to talk to people,
be very strong mentally,

38
00:02:35,415 –> 00:02:40,471
often even slightly aggressive
and able to defend your opinion,

39
00:02:40,472 –> 00:02:44,839
because it’s the only way
to manage a small company

40
00:02:44,840 –> 00:02:49,757
with a few or over a dozen employees –
as in case of my restaurant.

41
00:02:49,758 –> 00:02:53,686
It involves watching over
everything constantly,

42
00:02:53,687 –> 00:02:58,743
as there’s always something going on,
especially in gastronomy.

43
00:02:58,744 –> 00:03:02,443
It’s a work in
a constant whirl of activity.

44
00:03:02,444 –> 00:03:05,757
A lot is going on,
many problems arise,

45
00:03:05,758 –> 00:03:08,943
because it’s not
just managing people –

46
00:03:08,944 –> 00:03:12,943
it’s also hiring people,
firing people, training people.

47
00:03:12,944 –> 00:03:17,586
Also, working with a client,
technical problems in the premises,

48
00:03:17,587 –> 00:03:20,329
as sometimes
a pipe or equipment break.

49
00:03:20,330 –> 00:03:25,886
It’s a work from morning until evening,
very responsible, often very stressful,

50
00:03:25,887 –> 00:03:28,414
involving contacts with bureaucracy.

51
00:03:28,415 –> 00:03:31,814
It’s not suitable for vulnerable people.

52
00:03:31,815 –> 00:03:36,229
But it gives a lot of satisfaction
and there’s a lot going on,

53
00:03:36,230 –> 00:03:38,786
you have a contact with people, etc.

54
00:03:38,787 –> 00:03:43,671
In order to work in such an environment,
to manage a place like this,

55
00:03:43,672 –> 00:03:46,471
you need to like it,
having this kind of

56
00:03:46,472 –> 00:03:49,386
contact with people
and a constant action.

57
00:03:49,387 –> 00:03:55,200
The question is – are you a person able to
sacrifice, be tough and fight every day?

58
00:03:55,201 –> 00:03:59,871
Or would you rather work full-time,
not worry about a lot of things

59
00:03:59,872 –> 00:04:03,086
sleep peacefully
and riding a bike after work?

60
00:04:03,087 –> 00:04:08,057
Or do you want to own such a business,
working often 14 hours a day,

61
00:04:08,058 –> 00:04:12,829
where people don’t come to work,
where people don’t want to work,

62
00:04:12,830 –> 00:04:17,257
where many things go wrong at once
and you need to manage it?

63
00:04:17,258 –> 00:04:21,243
But it gives a lot of satisfaction,
as you can overcome

64
00:04:21,244 –> 00:04:23,500
your barriers and comfort zones.

65
00:04:23,501 –> 00:04:27,114
This type of business
or managing a place like mine

66
00:04:27,115 –> 00:04:32,343
reveals a person’s character,
when they’re able to manage it.

67
00:04:32,344 –> 00:04:35,143
I believe that I can.

68
00:04:35,144 –> 00:04:40,729
That’s what a traditional business
involves. Hope I haven’t discouraged you.

69
00:04:40,730 –> 00:04:43,600
Now, how an online business
looks like?

70
00:04:43,601 –> 00:04:48,399
Basics are the same – you need to have
this entrepreneurial thinking,

71
00:04:48,400 –> 00:04:51,429
so you must switch
from working full-time

72
00:04:51,430 –> 00:04:55,029
to someone who creates his
business, invests, etc.

73
00:04:55,030 –> 00:04:57,471
But I mentioned it previously.

74
00:04:57,472 –> 00:05:02,271
When we compare it to a traditional
business, it’s still a business

75
00:05:02,272 –> 00:05:04,429
and you need the same approach.

76
00:05:04,430 –> 00:05:08,871
But online business is
a completely different kind of business.

77
00:05:08,872 –> 00:05:13,643
That’s because an online business
must be based more on yourself.

78
00:05:13,644 –> 00:05:16,560
There’s not as much contact with people.

79
00:05:16,561 –> 00:05:20,857
In case of a traditional business,
you have some employees.

80
00:05:20,858 –> 00:05:25,743
In case of an online business,
let’s say you create books on Amazon

81
00:05:25,744 –> 00:05:30,743
like me, you have your blog, courses,
then you don’t have employees.

82
00:05:30,744 –> 00:05:35,100
You can commission writing
the content of a book to somebody,

83
00:05:35,101 –> 00:05:38,557
a product’s description
or creating its cover.

84
00:05:38,558 –> 00:05:43,671
But these are occasional work orders
that you commission to freelancers

85
00:05:43,672 –> 00:05:46,857
from your computer
and from your home.

86
00:05:46,858 –> 00:05:49,871
So, you don’t have
a contact with people,

87
00:05:49,872 –> 00:05:53,500
you don’t have employees
and you don’t have clients

88
00:05:53,501 –> 00:05:55,500
you have a contant with.

89
00:05:55,501 –> 00:05:59,329
That’s because if you’re
running a business on Amazon,

90
00:05:59,330 –> 00:06:03,357
you don’t have an access to clients,
as Amazon takes over

91
00:06:03,358 –> 00:06:07,243
the whole customer service
and does everything for you.

92
00:06:07,244 –> 00:06:11,343
It’s cool, because you don’t have to
deal with customers,

93
00:06:11,344 –> 00:06:14,529
which can be
either advantage or disadvantage.

94
00:06:14,530 –> 00:06:19,929
That’s because a contact with people
is a different experience for everyone.

95
00:06:19,930 –> 00:06:24,500
I’m quite an introvert,
so I really appreciate working in peace,

96
00:06:24,501 –> 00:06:28,986
in the comfort of my own home
and an online business suits me.

97
00:06:28,987 –> 00:06:31,857
But I’m also able to manage a restaurant.

98
00:06:31,858 –> 00:06:37,143
There are different kinds of people –
like introverts, who prefer solitude,

99
00:06:37,144 –> 00:06:41,757
working from home and for such people
online business works great.

100
00:06:41,758 –> 00:06:46,314
It’s the answer for the needs of people
who like working alone

101
00:06:46,315 –> 00:06:49,857
and they feel uncomfortable
in a loud, noisy place

102
00:06:49,858 –> 00:06:54,686
where they’re attacked, often mentally,
by people and prefer working

103
00:06:54,687 –> 00:06:56,814
in the comfort of their homes.

104
00:06:56,815 –> 00:07:00,443
They focus on working in solitude,
they don’t hurry

105
00:07:00,444 –> 00:07:03,814
and are able to work
more efficiently this way.

106
00:07:03,815 –> 00:07:06,929
The question is –
what option do you prefer?

107
00:07:06,930 –> 00:07:09,957
What will work better in your case?

108
00:07:09,958 –> 00:07:13,200
I think you feel what’s better for you.

109
00:07:13,201 –> 00:07:15,529
And neither option is better.

110
00:07:15,530 –> 00:07:20,429
Some people feel comfortable
in noisy places with a lot of employees.

111
00:07:20,430 –> 00:07:24,786
Others prefer more quiet,
which an online business provides,

112
00:07:24,787 –> 00:07:29,371
even if it’s still stressful
and demands a long-term, hard work.

113
00:07:29,372 –> 00:07:34,200
But it’s happening in completely
different conditions – often in home.

114
00:07:34,201 –> 00:07:37,557
Another very important
aspect is an investment.

115
00:07:37,558 –> 00:07:40,643
Let’s say
you want to open a small pub

116
00:07:40,644 –> 00:07:44,357
or you want to open
a business on Amazon, or a blog.

117
00:07:44,358 –> 00:07:49,600
Investment in a traditional business
is simply more expensive.

118
00:07:49,601 –> 00:07:55,300
If you want to open your restaurant,
you must invest much more money.

119
00:07:55,301 –> 00:07:58,414
Renting the premises,
renovating it,

120
00:07:58,415 –> 00:08:03,014
hiring employees,
buying equipment, concessions, etc.

121
00:08:03,015 –> 00:08:05,471
These are large costs to bear.

122
00:08:05,472 –> 00:08:10,486
In case of an online business on Amazon –
even the more expensive type –

123
00:08:10,487 –> 00:08:12,186
the costs are lower.

124
00:08:12,187 –> 00:08:16,919
I’m the supporter of the idea to
open an online business gradually,

125
00:08:16,920 –> 00:08:20,805
while you work full-time
and invest some small amounts.

126
00:08:20,806 –> 00:08:25,629
In this case, investments of starting
such a business are really low.

127
00:08:25,630 –> 00:08:30,557
You can invest 10-20% of your savings
or income from a full-time job

128
00:08:30,558 –> 00:08:34,529
and start opening
an online business gradually,

129
00:08:34,530 –> 00:08:36,586
while working full-time.

130
00:08:36,587 –> 00:08:41,443
If you want to open a restaurant
or a company with a few employees,

131
00:08:41,444 –> 00:08:45,243
then you can’t have this business
and work full-time,

132
00:08:45,244 –> 00:08:49,943
but you must devote to such a business,
have more savings and time.

133
00:08:49,944 –> 00:08:52,729
So, it’s something completely different.

134
00:08:52,730 –> 00:08:57,886
Another important factor is costs,
as if you open a traditional business,

135
00:08:57,887 –> 00:09:01,200
having even one employee,
some small premises –

136
00:09:01,201 –> 00:09:05,029
I don’t even mention
bigger restaurants or companies –

137
00:09:05,030 –> 00:09:07,143
then the fixed costs are huge.

138
00:09:07,144 –> 00:09:11,643
Regardless of sales and turnover,
you have to bear these costs.

139
00:09:11,644 –> 00:09:16,843
You have to pay for premises,
employees, electricity, gas, water, etc.,

140
00:09:16,844 –> 00:09:19,900
which you use,
even if you lack customers.

141
00:09:19,901 –> 00:09:25,343
In case of online business,
your monthly costs are relatively small.

142
00:09:25,344 –> 00:09:29,614
Of course, you have to pay
social insurance and accounting.

143
00:09:29,615 –> 00:09:32,700
However, in case of
selling books on Amazon,

144
00:09:32,701 –> 00:09:36,159
you can do it even without
an economic activity.

145
00:09:36,160 –> 00:09:41,600
Nevertheless, the fixed cost of running
an online business are much lower.

146
00:09:41,601 –> 00:09:46,171
A server in case of a blog
or books on Amazon cost you nothing.

147
00:09:46,172 –> 00:09:49,657
If you create a product
for $100-200 or for free

148
00:09:49,658 –> 00:09:53,119
and release it,
then it doesn’t cost you nothing.

149
00:09:53,120 –> 00:09:57,133
Amazon handles the rest
and it doesn’t cost you anything.

150
00:09:57,134 –> 00:10:01,414
If you write a blog,
you have to bear the costs of a server

151
00:10:01,415 –> 00:10:06,671
and a few additional ones, but these are
very small in a scope of a month.

152
00:10:06,672 –> 00:10:11,957
For example, one sale is able to
exceed the cost of running your business,

153
00:10:11,958 –> 00:10:15,871
which is different in case of
a traditional business.

154
00:10:15,872 –> 00:10:19,929
That’s because a weaker month
while running a restaurant

155
00:10:19,930 –> 00:10:24,471
or a traditional business
can cost you tens of thousands dollars.

156
00:10:24,472 –> 00:10:28,629
In case of online business,
you just risk to earn nothing.

157
00:10:28,630 –> 00:10:32,814
I want to give you
some food for thought with this video,

158
00:10:32,815 –> 00:10:37,314
so that you can think
what type of business is suited for you.

159
00:10:37,315 –> 00:10:41,800
Also, what type of person are you
and what will work for you.

160
00:10:41,801 –> 00:10:45,786
Are you the kind of person
who feels comfortable at home

161
00:10:45,787 –> 00:10:49,271
or in a big company
where there’s a lot going on?

162
00:10:49,272 –> 00:10:54,657
And also, how much are you able to
invest in order to start such a business?

163
00:10:54,658 –> 00:10:57,686
